Jibhi and Tirthan Valley Trip: Route, Best Time and What to Do
A quieter Himachal break: how to reach Jibhi and the Tirthan Valley from Delhi, when to go, and what to see - Jalori Pass, Serolsar Lake and the Tirthan river.
Where Jibhi and Tirthan are
Jibhi and the Tirthan Valley lie in the Banjar area of Kullu district, Himachal Pradesh. Wooden village houses, apple orchards, waterfalls and a clear trout river make it a calmer alternative to Manali. The valley is also the gateway to the Great Himalayan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
How to get there from Delhi
- Distance: roughly 500 km by road.
- Route: Delhi - Chandigarh - Mandi - Aut, then turn off towards Banjar for Tirthan and Jibhi.
- Overnight bus: take a Manali-bound bus and get off at Aut, then a taxi to the valley (about an hour).
Best time to visit
- March to June: green valleys and comfortable days.
- September to November: clear views after the rain.
- December to February: snow is possible; Jalori Pass can close after heavy snowfall.
- July and August: monsoon rain can affect mountain roads.
What to do
- Drive or walk up to Jalori Pass for wide Himalayan views.
- Hike from Jalori to Serolsar Lake through oak forest - an easy-to-moderate walk of a few kilometres each way.
- Visit the Jibhi waterfall and the old wooden temples and houses of the area.
- Sit by the Tirthan river, try the local trout, or take a nature walk near the national park.
A simple 4-night plan
Night 0: overnight bus from Delhi. Day 1: reach Jibhi, rest and walk to the waterfall. Day 2: Jalori Pass and Serolsar Lake. Day 3: Tirthan Valley and the river. Day 4: village walks, then the overnight bus back.
Tips
- Pack warm clothes - evenings are cold even in summer.
- Mobile networks are weaker in parts of the valley.
- Many stays are family-run homestays: book early for long weekends.
